Based in Washington DC, Rick Edmunds is a senior partner at Booz & Company and leader of the firm's global healthcare practice. Mr. Edmunds works with leading global and U.S. based health care companies, including major pharmaceutical manufacturers, medical product companies, and health care service companies like health plans and pharmacy benefit managers. His expertise includes corporate and business unit strategy, product and customer commercialization strategies in life sciences, performance improvement programs, and organizational design.
Mr. Edmunds brings business strategy and transformation skills and a solid understanding of the health care and pharmaceutical industries. In his recent strategy assignments, he addressed the implications of changing U.S. market dynamics on pharmaceutical companies, provided core business assessments, and a diversification strategy for a leading pharmacy benefit manager. He also provided strategy development, and mergers and acquisitions support for a mid-size orthopedic company. Another assignment for a leading pharmaceutical company led Mr. Edmunds to determine how more technology-enabled patient care models might evolve and developing a multi-pronged strategy for the company to influence and participate in it.
Beyond strategy, Mr. Edmunds has addressed a full range of strategic and operational issues focusing on business-unit and product-line strategy and organizational effectiveness, particularly in the sales and marketing functions. For a major pharmaceutical company, he recently assessed optimizing pharmaceutical resource allocation and local market approaches based on variability in regional opportunities. Examples of other recent sales-force and marketing efforts include the introduction of hospital selling to a specialist sales force, targeted improvement in district manager effectiveness, launch preparedness for a new antiviral product, and a sales stimulation effort for a recently launched cardiovascular product.
Mr. Edmunds has done considerable work to help pharmaceutical companies improve results in their managed markets. Most recently he worked to develop and launch an analytics-based tool to better assessing risks and rewards in pharmaceutical contracting and to direct major account management and pull-through opportunities for several major pharmaceutical companies.
A recognized thought leader, Mr. Edmunds co-authored the IN VIVO magazine article "Competing in a Retail Health Consumer Marketplace" and the strategy+business article "Health Care’s Retail Solution." He also co-authored the Booz & Company study "Consumer and Physician Readiness for a Retail Healthcare Market – Changing the Basis of Competition."
Mr. Edmunds joined Booz & Company in 2005 after nearly 13 years at McKinsey & Co., where he worked as part of their Pharma/Medical Product Leadership Group. He holds an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia, where he received both the Shermet Award and the Faculty Award for Academic Excellence. He also holds a BA in Economics from the University of North Carolina.
