Booz & Company at the World Economic Forum

Booz & Company at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2012

As a selected Strategic Partner of the World Economic Forum we strongly support the Forum's commitment to improve the state of the world.

Chairman Joe Saddi, CEO Shumeet Banerji, and a group of Booz & Company senior partners — including DeAnne Aguirre, Dr. Klaus-Peter Gushurst, and Per-Ola Karlsson — attended the 42nd annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, January 25-29, 2012.

The theme of this year's meeting was The Great Transformation: Shaping New Models. The rebalancing and deleveraging that is reshaping the global economy is the most pressing issue facing leaders today. How can developed countries deleverage without falling back into recession, and how will emerging nations curb inflation and avoid future economic bubbles and challenges? Both paths will play out as the world’s population passes 7 billion and is further interconnected at an unprecedented level by information technology. The net result will be transformational challenges in social values, resource needs, and technological advances as never before — necessitating new models and ideas on how to confront and get ahead of these challenges.

CEO Shumeet Banerji participated in the panel titled "The New Business Mindset", which addressed the critical societal, stakeholder, and regulatory concerns that are reshaping the models of business. Discussion points included: aligning short-term interests and long-term goals, incentivizing responsible conduct, and understanding the changing nature of corporate ownership. Joining Mr. Banerji on the panel were: Kendall J. Powell, Chairman and CEO of General Mills; Azim Premji, Chairman of Wipro; Ruth Simmons, President of Brown University; and Daniel Vasella, Chairman of the Board of Novartis. Bill George of the Harvard Business School will moderate the panel.

Other Booz & Company events at Davos included:

  • Thursday, January 26: Middle Eastern lunch.
  • Booz & Company's annual Alpine Sweet nightcap event was held on Friday, January 27 at the Steigenberger Hotel Belvédère Davos.

Building Communities Around Digital Highways
Nationwide high-speed broadband networks, or digital highways, can significantly boost a country's socioeconomic growth. However, such digital highways become truly effective only when "digital communities" spring up beside them, with functions such as e-health, e-government, e-education, and smart grids being developed to take advantage of the connectivity that broadband offers.
